Sandbridge Paddle Fest & Expedition: 9/26/15

Posted on

We’re beyond stoked to announce our most ambitious project to date: our adoption of the Sandbridge Paddle Fest and the addition of the Surf & Adventure Expedition and festival site at Little Island Park on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015!

The inaugural Sandbridge Paddle Fest was held in 2013 with a very strong community and competitor response. Since then, adventure races have exploded with popularity, and there’s no better natural setup to host such an event than the south end of Sandbridge Beach. Little Island Park offers ample parking and exposition space, broad, sandy beaches, paddling opportunities at and the perfect launch point into gorgeous scenery for cycling through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park.

The spirit of the Sandbridge Paddle Fest & Expedition arises from our passion for the outdoors and a commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles, as well as supporting the conservation efforts of the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park. False Cape State Park is one of the last remaining undeveloped areas along the Atlantic coast. As the former home of Native Americans, the historic Wash Woods community and a Coast Guard lifesaving station, False Cape honors the hardy souls who made a living from the sea.  In order to truly experience the nature and history of this unique and primitive setting, participants in the Surf and Adventure Expedition will stop at designated checkpoints throughout the parks before returning to Little Island Park.

The funds raised by the Sandbridge Paddle Fest & Expedition will support the Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that exists to support Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation by raising funds, accepting gifts and providing other resources to enhance existing programs, services, facilities and technology.

This event will feature the following activities:

  • Sandbridge Paddle Fest: 2-mile Stand Up Paddleboard course and 2-mile beach run with obstacles\
  • Surf and Adventure Expedition: 2-mile Stand Up Paddleboard course, 2-mile beach run, and Expedition bike ride through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park. This event will be limited to 80 participants in order to control the number of people accessing the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park.
  • Kid’s Expedition: Short beach run with obstacles fun for kids under 12 years of age.
  • Expo area

Billabong Surf Camps 2014: Week 6

It’s not the size of the surf camp that makes it great. It’s the stoke of the students and instructors that make the difference!

That was the case for Billabong Surf Camps Week 6. Sure, we didn’t break any attendance records, but we were just as stoked as ever to teach our crew of campers the ways of the water. We were even treated to an awe-inspiring display of power from a pod of dolphins hunting a school of fish very close to shore, just outside the breakers!

Enjoy these photos of our Billabong Surf Camps Week 6 surfers ripping it up and taking in a cloudy-but-beautiful morning at Little Island Park earlier this week.

We had to dodge some raindrops to make it happen, but Surf & Adventure Billabong Surf Camps provided endless stoke to our Week 5 rippers! Clean conditions were on tap again to provide ideal canvases for “shreducation” at Little Island Park on the south end of Sandbridge Beach.

We’re back at it again this week for another lineup of co-ed camp and girls-only Chica Camp.  Sign up for Billabong Surf Camps by clicking here or give us a ring at (757) 721-6210!

Billabong Surf Camps 2014: Week 4

Another classic week of Billabong Surf Camps at Sandbridge’s Little Island Park is in the books! The gang was as lively and stoked as any we’ve had, and the energy was contagious from the campers to the instructors, not to any bystanders who happened to see the fun from the beach. While stuff offshore winds made for some chilly upwelling waters, the breeze had an amazing grooming affect on the rolling 1- to 2-foot surf — perfect for learning and mastering how to surf.

We’re at it again this Thursday and Friday for our first all-girls Billabong Chica Camp of the summer, followed by Week 5 of our three-day, co-ed Billabong Surf Camps that starts on Monday at 8 a.m. at Little Island. Sign up for the fun by clicking here or give us a ring at (757) 721-6210!

Though we had to dodge some raindrops and thunderclaps on the third and final day, our Week 3 Billabong Camps went off without a hitch! We had ample swell for all three days of camp and smooth seas for optimal learning conditions. As always, the campers were treated to a session on the ever-popular SUPsquatch and a pizza party back at the shop on day three!

Week 4 of camp is set to roll out next Monday at Little Island Park at 8 a.m. on the beach in front of the north access. Sign up today by calling us (757) 721-621o or online at http://oceanrentalsltd.com/surf-lessons-camps/
